The number of Manitoba farms producing certified organic products more than doubled to 196 between 2001 and 2006, Statistics Canada reported today.
However, the province still lagged behind the three other western provinces in organic production.
Saskatchewan had 1,181 organic farms in 2006, followed by 452 in British Columbia and 230 in Alberta. Across Canada, there were 3,555 farms producing certified organic products.
Most of Manitoba's organic farms 170 produced hay or field crops, while 21 produced fruit, vegetable or greenhouse products and 44 raised animals or animal products.
Many of the field crops grown organically are sold internationally not processed, sold or eaten in Canada, StatsCan said.
